What is digital marketing? Digital marketing is any marketing that reaches people through online channels: search engines, social media, email, websites and online ads. It lets businesses target the right people, measure what each dollar returns and adjust quickly, which is why it now makes up most marketing activity for NZ businesses of every size.
This plain-English guide explains the main channels, whether you can do it yourself, what drives the cost and how to choose an agency. To see how the channels fit together in practice, browse our digital marketing services.
What is digital marketing?
Traditional marketing reaches people through print, radio, TV and billboards. Digital marketing reaches them on the devices they use every day. The difference is not only the screen. It is the data.
With digital channels, you can choose who sees your message based on what they search for, what they are interested in or whether they have visited your website before. You can see how many people saw an ad, clicked it and bought. That feedback loop is what makes digital marketing so powerful, and also what makes it easy to waste money if nobody is reading the data.
The main digital marketing channels
- Search engine optimisation (SEO): improving your website so it ranks on Google for the searches your customers make. It takes effort up front but keeps delivering traffic without paying per click.
- Google Ads: paid ads in Google search results, YouTube, Gmail and across websites. You pay when someone clicks, and you can reach people at the exact moment they search.
- Social media advertising: paid ads on Meta (Facebook and Instagram), TikTok and LinkedIn. Strong for reaching people before they search and for showing products visually.
- Organic social media: regular posts and community building on your own profiles.
- Email and SMS marketing: messages to people who have signed up, from welcome emails to abandoned cart reminders. Usually one of the highest-returning channels for online stores.
- Content marketing: guides, videos and resources that answer customer questions and build trust.
- Your website: where most of these channels send people. If it is slow or confusing, every other channel works harder for less.
- AI search: making sure ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews can find and recommend your business.
Few businesses need every channel at once. The right mix depends on how your customers buy. A local trade business might start with Google Business Profile and Google Ads. An online store might lead with Meta ads, email and SEO.
Can you do digital marketing yourself?
Yes, especially early on. Many owners run their own social posts, set up a Google Business Profile and boost a few posts. The tools are built to be accessible.
The limits show up as you grow:
- Time: doing it well takes hours every week, and that time comes out of running the business.
- Expertise: ad platforms change often, and small settings, such as tracking, audiences or bidding, can make a big difference to results.
- Creative: ads live or die on the quality of the photos, video and copy.
- Measurement: without proper tracking, it is hard to know which channel is really driving sales.
A sensible path is to learn the basics yourself, then bring in help for the channels that matter most once you are spending enough that small improvements pay for the expertise.
What digital marketing costs in NZ
There is no single price, because "digital marketing" covers very different work. The cost depends on:
- Ad spend: the money paid to Google, Meta or TikTok. This is separate from any management fee.
- Management and strategy: the time needed to plan, run, test and report on campaigns.
- Creative production: photography, video, design and copywriting. Paid social in particular needs a steady flow of new creative.
- Competition: some industries, such as legal, finance and trades in big cities, have far higher costs per click than others.
- Scope: one channel costs less to run than five, but may also deliver less.
The better question is what return you need. Work out what a customer is worth to you, how many you need and what you can afford to pay to win one. That gives you a sensible budget, and it gives any agency a clear target.
How to choose a digital marketing agency
- Ask for proof: case studies with real numbers, not just logos.
- Check partner status: Google Partner, Meta partner and Shopify partner badges show a level of platform expertise and accountability.
- Look at how they report: you want revenue, leads and cost per result, not just clicks and impressions.
- Check who does the work: creative, ads and websites under one roof make it easier to fix problems end to end.
- Understand the terms: what is included, how you can exit and who owns the ad accounts and data. You should always own your accounts.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between digital marketing and social media marketing?
Social media marketing is one part of digital marketing. Digital marketing also includes SEO, Google Ads, email, content and your website.
Which digital marketing channel is best for small businesses?
It depends on how customers find you. Businesses people search for often start with Google. Products people discover visually often start with Meta or TikTok ads.
How do I know if digital marketing is working?
Track leads or sales back to each channel and compare the cost of each one with what that customer is worth. Clicks and likes alone do not tell you much.
