FAQ

Google Shopping questions, answered straight

What New Zealand online stores ask us before handing over their Shopping campaigns.

What does a Google Shopping agency do?
A Google Shopping agency manages the product ads that show your photo, price and store name on Google. At Refined that covers Merchant Center setup, feed optimisation, Standard Shopping and Performance Max campaigns, conversion tracking, margin-aware bidding and live reporting, plus product photography and video from our in-house team when your ads need better creative.
What are Google Shopping ads?
Google Shopping ads are product listings with an image, price and store name that appear in Google search results, the Shopping tab, Google Images and YouTube. They are built from your product feed in Google Merchant Center rather than from keywords, so the quality of that feed decides when and how often your products show.
How much do Google Shopping ads cost in NZ?
You pay Google per click, with prices set by auction, so they vary with your category, product prices and competition. You choose the ad budget. Our management fee is separate, priced on the work your catalogue and campaigns need and shown to the hour. If a budget looks too small for Google to learn from, we will say so.
Are Google Shopping ads worth it?
For most online stores with clear pricing and healthy margins, yes, because Shopping reaches people who are already comparing products to buy. It is harder to make pay for very low-margin products or one-off custom work. We check your margins, average order value and competition first, and tell you honestly if the numbers do not stack up.
What is Performance Max?
Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that uses automation to show your ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps from one campaign. For online stores it runs on your Merchant Center feed plus the images, video and copy in each asset group, guided by audience signals and your conversion data.
Should we run Standard Shopping or Performance Max?
Often both. Performance Max usually reaches further because it covers more of Google's inventory, but it gives you less control and less visibility. Standard Shopping offers tighter control over products, search terms and bids, which helps with testing and low-margin ranges. We decide per account, based on your catalogue, margins and conversion data.
Do I need a Google Merchant Center account?
Yes. Shopping ads and the product side of Performance Max run on product data held in Google Merchant Center, linked to your Google Ads account. We set it up or take over yours, verify your website, connect your store and fix disapprovals or policy warnings before any campaign starts spending.
How do you optimise a Google Shopping feed?
We start with the fields Google uses to match products to searches: titles, descriptions, product types, Google product categories, GTINs, brand, colour and size. Titles are rewritten around how people actually search, missing attributes are filled, and custom labels are added for margin, price band, season and best sellers, so campaigns can bid on what matters.
Can you manage Google Shopping for a Shopify store?
Yes. Refined is a Shopify Partner, and we connect stores to Merchant Center through the Google & YouTube app or a dedicated feed app, depending on how much control the feed needs. We then manage titles, variants, attributes and custom labels, and check that your tracking reports Shopify orders accurately before budgets grow.
Do you create the images and video for Performance Max?
Yes. Our in-house team shoots product photography, lifestyle images and short video, cut to the sizes Performance Max, YouTube and Shopping listings need. Strong product images also lift Standard Shopping, because the photo is the first thing shoppers compare. Shoots are planned around your best sellers and what the data shows is converting.

The problem

Most Shopping campaigns are a messy feed on autopilot.

Plenty of online stores connect a feed, switch on Performance Max and hope. Here is what usually goes wrong, and how we run it instead.

What usually goes wrong
  • –Product titles copied straight from the website
  • –Disapproved products nobody has noticed
  • –Every product bid the same, whatever the margin
  • –Brand searches making Performance Max look better than it is
  • –Reports full of revenue, empty of profit
What we do instead
  • ✓Rewrite titles and attributes around how people search
  • ✓Check Merchant Center weekly and fix disapprovals fast
  • ✓Group products by margin, price and stock with custom labels
  • ✓Separate brand demand from new customers
  • ✓Report revenue and return on spend live in Refined Analytics
How it works

Six steps from a messy feed to campaigns that pay.

The same framework on every account, scoped to your catalogue and margins. Nothing is set and forgotten.

01
Audit

Merchant Center, feed, tracking and campaigns reviewed to find disapprovals, wasted spend and the products Google is ignoring.

02
Feed

Titles, product types, GTINs and custom labels fixed in your feed app or a supplemental feed, so Google knows exactly what you sell.

03
Tracking

Server-side tagging, enhanced conversions and order values checked so the account learns from real sales.

04
Build

Standard Shopping and Performance Max structured around product groups, margins and brand versus new demand.

05
Optimise

Search terms, product groups, ROAS targets and budgets reviewed weekly and moved to what sells.

06
Grow

New products, seasonal pushes and fresh creative from our studio, with every change visible in Refined Analytics.

What it costs

Priced on the work. Shown to the hour.

No packages and no hidden fees. Your ad budget goes to Google, and our fee is set by what your catalogue and campaigns need, with every hour shown: feed work, build, creative and optimisation. For a feel for click prices, see our guide to Google Ads costs for small businesses.

Google Shopping in New Zealand

What a good Google Shopping agency does for an online store.

Google Shopping puts your product, price and store name in front of people who are already comparing what to buy. Done well, it is one of the most direct ways to sell online. Done badly, it quietly spends your budget on products that never pay. The difference is rarely the campaign type. It is whether the feed tells Google exactly what you sell, whether tracking reports real orders, and whether bids reflect what each product earns. Shopping usually runs alongside Search, so we plan both as part of your Google Ads management and stop them competing for the same clicks.

The feed is the campaign

Shopping ads are built from your product data, not keywords, so the feed decides which searches you show for. We set up or take over Google Merchant Center, verify your site and fix disapprovals and policy warnings, then improve the data Google matches on: titles written the way people search, product types, Google product categories, GTINs, brand, colour and size. On Shopify that runs through the Google & YouTube app, a dedicated feed app or a supplemental feed, depending on how much control the catalogue needs. Custom labels then mark margin, price band, season and best sellers, so campaigns can treat each group differently.

Standard Shopping, Performance Max, or both

Performance Max uses Google's automation to show your products across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps from one campaign. It can scale well, but it gives you less control and less visibility than Standard Shopping. We split the catalogue into asset groups by category or margin, guide it with audience signals from your own customer lists and site visitors, and stop brand searches flattering the results. Standard Shopping still earns its place for testing, tight budgets and products that need careful bids. We use each where it pays, and tell you when one of them is not.

Bidding on margin, not just revenue

The same return on ad spend can be healthy on one product and a loss on another. Most stores carry a mix of high- and low-margin lines, so one ROAS target across the whole catalogue overspends on some products and starves others. We group products by margin with custom labels, set targets for each group and move budget weekly to the products and categories that actually make money. If you are not sure what counts as a good ROAS for your store, we work it out from your margins before we spend.

Creative from our own studio

In Shopping, the product photo is often the first thing people compare, and Performance Max needs images, logos, copy and video for every asset group. Without them, Google fills the gaps with automatically generated assets. Our in-house team shoots product photography, lifestyle images and short video, cut to the sizes each placement needs, and the same shoots feed your Meta ads and email. Because the people shooting sit beside the people reading the data, new creative is planned around the products that are already selling.

Tracking and reporting you can trust

Google bids towards whatever you tell it is a conversion, so tracking comes before budget. We set up server-side tagging, enhanced conversions and purchase values from your store, so Google learns from real orders rather than patchy browser data. Every account then reports through to orders, revenue and return in Refined Analytics, with a weekly note on what moved, what we changed in the feed and campaigns, and what we are testing next. Shopping also works harder as part of a full ecommerce marketing plan, with Meta, email and SEO run by the same team.

Paid media results

11x return on ad spend, averaged across all paid channels and clients.

Shopping, Performance Max, Search and Meta run from one plan and judged on revenue, not clicks. Proferlo Furniture, a furniture retailer selling across New Zealand and Australia, is one example, with new product content shot in-house to feed the ads.
