Conversion rate optimisation NZ that pays for itself.

Conversion rate optimisation (CRO) turns more of the traffic you already pay for into enquiries and sales. For New Zealand websites and online stores, we find where visitors drop off, fix the content and pages that lose them, and test what is left.

WHY REFINED

A growth team with a production studio inside it.

We started Refined because businesses kept being sold the same recycled packages by agencies they never actually spoke to. So we built the opposite: a Kiwi-owned team in Grey Lynn where the strategists, media buyers, developers, shooters and editors sit together, and you talk to all of them.

Everything in-house
Strategy, film, photo, websites and paid media from one team. Creative is built around what the data says, not handed over by a separate studio.
Direct access
You work with the people doing the work. No account managers passing messages along.
Bespoke, not packaged
Every plan is scoped to your market and margins. If a channel will not pay its way for you, we say so before you spend.
Reported live
Enquiries, orders and return on spend in Refined Analytics as they happen, with a weekly report that says what we did and what we are changing next.

FAQ

Conversion rate optimisation questions, answered straight

What New Zealand business owners ask us before starting conversion optimisation.

What is conversion rate optimisation?
Conversion rate optimisation, or CRO, is the process of increasing the share of website visitors who take a valuable action, such as buying, enquiring or booking. It uses analytics, user research, content and testing to find and fix what stops people converting.
How much traffic do we need for CRO?
A/B testing needs enough visitors and conversions to produce reliable results, so higher-traffic sites can test faster. Lower-traffic sites still benefit from research-led fixes to forms, speed, messaging and page structure, even without formal tests.
Do we need a new website to improve conversions?
Usually not. Most conversion gains come from improving the content, key pages, forms and checkout on your existing site. If the platform itself is holding you back, we will tell you, and our website team can rebuild it.
What tools do you use?
We use GA4 for analytics, heatmap and session recording tools to understand behaviour, and A/B testing tools suited to your platform. We set up tracking first so every change can be measured, and results are reported live in Refined Analytics.
Is CRO only for online stores?
No. Service businesses, B2B companies and lead generation sites benefit just as much. Instead of sales, we optimise for enquiries, calls, bookings or demo requests.
Will CRO hurt our SEO?
Not when tests are set up properly. We follow Google's guidance for testing, avoid cloaking and keep tests time-limited. Many CRO improvements, such as faster pages and clearer content, help SEO too.
How do you decide what to test first?
We rank ideas by expected impact, the confidence our research gives us and the effort to build. High-traffic pages close to the point of conversion, such as product pages, checkouts and enquiry forms, usually come first, and content is often the biggest lever.
What does a CRO agency do?
A CRO agency finds out why visitors are not converting and fixes it. That means checking tracking, reviewing analytics, running user research, rewriting content, redesigning key pages, simplifying forms and checkouts, and A/B testing where traffic allows. At Refined the same team builds the changes and reports the results live.
What is a good conversion rate?
It depends on your industry, traffic sources, price point and what counts as a conversion, so a single benchmark can mislead. The most useful comparison is your own baseline by page and channel. We measure where you are now, then work to lift it and report the change on enquiries and revenue.
How do I improve my website's conversion rate?
Start by fixing tracking so you can measure. Then find where visitors drop off and why, using analytics, recordings and customer questions, and improve the pages closest to the sale first: clearer content and proof, simpler forms and checkout, faster pages. Test changes where traffic allows and keep what lifts enquiries or sales.

The problem

Most businesses buy more traffic before fixing what the traffic lands on.

New Zealand businesses are sold clicks, impressions and redesigns. Nobody asks why visitors leave. Here is what usually goes wrong, and how we run it instead.

What usually goes wrong
  • –Paying for traffic that arrives and leaves without enquiring
  • –Redesigns based on opinion, with no data on what was broken
  • –Button-colour tests while the real problem is the content
  • –Tracking so broken that no test could ever be called
  • –Recommendations in a deck that nobody ever builds
What we do instead
  • ✓Fix tracking first so every change is measured on revenue
  • ✓Research where and why people leave before changing anything
  • ✓Start with content, proof and page structure, the biggest levers
  • ✓Test properly where traffic allows, fix directly where it does not
  • ✓Build the changes ourselves and report the lift, live
How it works

Our CRO process: six steps from leaking traffic to compounding conversion.

The same framework on every site and store, scoped to your traffic and margins. Nothing is set and forgotten.

01
Track

GA4, server-side tracking and conversion events checked and fixed, so the baseline is real before anything changes.

02
Audit

Every key page, form and checkout step reviewed against the data to find where visitors drop off and what the quick wins are.

03
Research

Heatmaps, recordings, surveys and your sales team's inbox, to understand why people hesitate, not just where.

04
Prioritise

Ideas ranked by expected impact, confidence and effort. Content and high-traffic pages near the point of conversion usually come first.

05
Build and test

Our writers, designers and developers make the changes. Where traffic allows we A/B test; where it does not, we ship the research-led fix and measure.

06
Compound

Winners rolled out, losers learnt from, the next round queued. You see conversion and revenue move live and hear from us weekly.

Our approach

Research, test, measure.

Three disciplines, one team. We find out why visitors leave, change what the evidence points to, and measure the result on enquiries and revenue.

Research

Why, not just where

Analytics shows where people drop off. Recordings, heatmaps, surveys and your sales inbox show why. We combine them before anyone proposes a change.

Test

Content first, built by us

Copy, proof and page structure usually move the most. Our writers, designers and developers build the changes and A/B test them where traffic allows.

Measure

Revenue, live

Tracking is fixed before the first change. Conversion rate, enquiries and revenue by page and channel appear in Refined Analytics as they move, with a weekly note on what we did.

Refined Analytics reporting portal, built by Refined
Refined Analytics, the live reporting portal we built for our clients. Every test and change reports into it.
What it costs

Priced on the work. Shown to the hour.

No packages and no hidden fees. Your investment is set by the size of the opportunity and the work needed to capture it, and you see where every hour goes: research, content, design, development and testing.

Traffic and conversions

How much traffic and how many conversions the site has, which sets what can be tested and what should simply be fixed.

Pages and journeys in scope

One landing page and form, or a full store from collection to checkout, changes the volume of research and build.

Research depth

Analytics and recordings alone, or surveys, customer interviews and competitor reviews on top.

Build and content effort

How much copy, design and development each round of changes needs on your platform.

Conversion rate optimisation in New Zealand

What good CRO looks like for a New Zealand business.

Conversion rate optimisation is the discipline of getting more enquiries, orders or bookings from the visitors you already have. It is the cheapest growth most businesses never buy, because it is easier to be sold more traffic than to ask why the current traffic leaves. Every one percent lift in conversion makes every dollar you spend on SEO, Google Ads and Meta ads work harder, which is why our CRO team sits in the same Grey Lynn studio as the people running those channels. We work with service businesses, B2B companies and online stores across New Zealand, and we measure the work the same way every time: on the enquiries and revenue that reach your bank account, tracked live in Refined Analytics.

Tracking first, or nothing else counts

Most sites we audit cannot answer a simple question: which pages and channels produce enquiries, and how many? Forms fire twice, purchases are missed, and ad platforms report numbers that do not match the till. Before we change a word, we fix GA4, set up server-side tracking and conversion APIs and agree what counts as a conversion. That gives a baseline you can trust, so when a page changes you know whether it worked. It also means every CRO win shows up in your SEO and paid media reporting, because they are reading the same data.

Research before opinions

Analytics shows where people leave. Heatmaps and session recordings show what they were doing when they left. Surveys, reviews and your sales team's inbox show what they were worried about. We put those together to understand why a page loses people, then rank fixes by expected impact, the confidence the research gives us and the effort to build. High-traffic pages close to the point of conversion, such as product pages, checkouts, pricing and enquiry forms, usually come first. We do not test button colours while the content is the problem.

Content is the biggest lever: the Proferlo lesson

Proferlo Furniture had steady traffic and a store that was not converting it. We did not redesign the site or add ad spend. We rewrote and restructured the content across collections and product pages so each one answered what shoppers were asking, showed proof of quality and made the next step obvious. Once that content was live, online revenue rose on the same traffic. That pattern repeats across most sites we see: the words, structure and evidence on a page matter more than the layout around them. Our CRO work therefore starts with copy and messaging, written by people who understand your product, and uses design and development to make the content land.

Testing where traffic allows, fixing where it does not

A/B testing needs enough visitors and conversions to give a reliable answer, so high-traffic stores and lead-generation sites can run a steady programme of tests on their key pages. Lower-traffic sites still benefit: research-led fixes to forms, speed, messaging and page structure are shipped directly and measured against the baseline. Either way, tests are set up to Google's guidance, time-limited and never cloaked, so CRO helps rather than hurts your SEO. Many improvements, such as faster pages and clearer content, lift rankings as well as conversion. For paid campaigns we build dedicated landing pages that match each message, which usually convert better than sending ad traffic to a homepage.

Built by the same team, reported live

The weakness of most CRO is the handover: an agency writes recommendations and someone else never builds them. Our writers, designers and developers work on Shopify, Webflow and WordPress every day, so a finding becomes a live change quickly, built properly and tracked. Conversion rate, enquiries and revenue by page and channel appear in Refined Analytics as they move, and you hear from us weekly on what we tested, what won, what we rolled out and what is next. If the platform itself is holding you back, we will tell you, and our website team can rebuild it. Usually, though, the biggest gains are already waiting on the site you have.

Conversion result

Proferlo Furniture: same traffic, more online revenue.

A furniture retailer with steady traffic and a store that was not converting it. No redesign and no extra ad spend: we rewrote and restructured the content across the store so each page answered what shoppers were asking and made the next step obvious. The same visitors started buying.

How the lift happened
01
Research
Search data, on-site behaviour and customer questions showed where shoppers hesitated and what they needed to see before buying.
02
Content
Collection and product pages rewritten and restructured to answer those questions, prove quality and make the next step obvious. No redesign, no extra spend.
03
Measure
Orders and revenue tracked by page and channel in Refined Analytics, so the lift was visible on the same traffic.
