WHY REFINED

Designed by the people who have to make it sell.

Most identities are designed in one place and handed to someone else to use. At Refined, strategy, design, web development and photo and video production sit together in Grey Lynn, so your identity is built by the same team that will put it to work in your website, content and campaigns.

Direct access
You work with the people doing the work. No account managers passing messages along.
Bespoke, not packaged
Every identity is scoped to your market and starting point. If a refresh will do the job, we say so before you spend.
Reported live
Once the brand is rolled out, enquiries, orders and return on spend show in Refined Analytics as they happen.

FAQ

Brand identity questions, answered straight

What New Zealand businesses ask us before starting identity work.

What is brand identity design?
Brand identity design is the visual system customers recognise you by: logo and wordmark, typography, colour, photography style and the layouts that hold them together. Done well, it turns your positioning into something people can see, and it stays consistent across your website, social, ads and everything else you put out.
What does a brand identity include?
Usually a logo and wordmark, a type pairing, a colour palette, a photography and video style, and brand guidelines that explain how to use them. We also build working templates for social posts, ads and web pages, so the identity is ready for the jobs your team does every week.
What is the difference between brand strategy and brand identity?
Brand strategy decides who you are for, what you stand for and why customers should choose you. Brand identity is how that looks: the logo, type, colour and imagery. Strategy comes first, because an identity designed without it is just decoration. If your positioning is not written down yet, we start there.
Can you design just a logo?
Yes, but we will ask what it needs to do first. A logo on its own rarely changes much; the type, colour and imagery around it do most of the work customers notice. If a logo is all you need, we design it to sit comfortably inside the system you already have.
What makes a good logo?
A good logo is simple, distinctive and works at every size, from a browser tab to a full-screen video. It should read in a single colour, look nothing like your competitors and suit your positioning. Clever is optional. Being recognisable and easy to use everywhere is not.
What are brand guidelines, and do I need them?
Brand guidelines are the rules for using your identity: logo spacing, colour values, type styles, photography direction and examples of it done right. You need them the moment anyone other than the original designer touches the brand, whether that is your team, a printer or another agency. Short, practical guidelines get used; long ones get ignored.
Can you refresh our identity instead of starting again?
Often, yes. If customers already recognise your logo, throwing it away wastes recognition you have paid for. A refresh can tighten the logo, update the type and colour, and add the photography style and templates that were missing. We will tell you honestly whether a refresh or a full rebrand is the better call.
Is photography part of a brand identity?
Yes, and it is often the part customers see most. Your photography and video style sets the mood before anyone reads a headline. Because our studio shoots in-house, we art direct product, people and place to match the identity, so your website, social and ads look like one brand.
How do you roll out a new identity?
We plan the rollout before the design is signed off: what changes first, what gets rebuilt and what simply gets updated. Then we apply the identity to your website, social profiles, ad creative and content together, and hand your team templates and guidelines so new work stays consistent after launch.
How much does brand identity design cost in NZ?
It depends on the scope: a logo refresh, a full identity system, or the system plus photography, templates and rollout. The number of places the brand has to work matters too. There are no packages. We scope it after a first conversation and show you where every hour goes before work starts.

The problem

Most identities fall apart the first time someone else has to use them.

A logo gets signed off, the files get sent, and a few months later the website, the socials and the ads look like three different businesses. Here is what usually goes wrong, and how we approach it.

What usually goes wrong
  • –A logo designed before anyone agreed what the brand stands for
  • –Fonts and colours that change with every designer and every post
  • –Stock photography that makes you look like everyone else
  • –Guidelines too long to use, so nobody uses them
  • –An identity that launches as a folder of files and nothing else
What we do instead
  • ✓Design from your positioning, so every choice has a reason
  • ✓Build one system of logo, type, colour and imagery, not a lone mark
  • ✓Art direct photography and film in our own studio to match
  • ✓Hand over templates for social, ads and web that your team can use
  • ✓Roll it out across your website and campaigns, then track what changes

How it works

Six steps from positioning to everywhere you show up.

The same process on every identity, scoped to your starting point. A refresh keeps what customers already recognise.

01
Audit

Your current brand, your competitors and how customers see you, so we keep anything that already earns recognition.

02
Position

Who you are for and what you stand for, confirmed or written from scratch before any design begins.

03
Design

Logo, wordmark, type and colour explored as one system and tested on real layouts, not shown on a blank page.

04
Direct

A photography and video style, set and shot in our own studio, so imagery matches the identity from the first post.

05
Systemise

Guidelines and working templates for social, ads and web, so your team can produce on-brand work without waiting on us.

06
Roll out

Website, channels and campaigns switch over together, tracked in Refined Analytics so you can see what the new identity changes.

What it costs

Priced on the work. Shown to the hour.

No packages and no hidden fees. Your investment is set by how much of the identity system you need, and you see where every hour goes: research, design, production and rollout.

Identity design in New Zealand

What good brand identity design looks like for a New Zealand business.

A brand identity is the set of visual decisions that make a business recognisable: the logo and wordmark, typography, colour, photography and the way they are laid out. Good identity design makes those decisions once, as a system, so every new page, post and ad looks like it came from the same place without anyone reinventing it. For a New Zealand business competing with bigger budgets, that consistency is how you get remembered between purchases. We design identities with the team that will also use them in your website, content and campaigns, so the system is tested against real work rather than a mood board.

Positioning first, design second

An identity can only express what the business has decided to stand for. Before any sketching, we confirm who you are for, what you do better than the alternatives and the tone that suits it. If that has never been written down, our brand positioning work comes first, and our guide to brand strategy explains how strategy differs from identity and why the order matters. Design without positioning tends to follow trends, and trends date quickly. With it, every choice about type, colour and imagery has a reason a customer would recognise.

A system, not just a logo

Customers rarely remember a logo on its own. They remember the colour of the packaging, the style of the photography and the way the headlines are set. So we design the logo and wordmark alongside a type pairing, a colour palette with readable contrast and layout rules built for screens first and print second. Every piece is tested on real layouts, such as a product page, a social post and an ad, before anything is signed off, so you see the identity working rather than floating on a white page. Where video is part of the mix, titles, colour grade and motion follow the same rules, so a film opens and closes like the rest of the brand.

Photography and film, art directed in-house

Imagery sets the mood of a brand faster than any logo. Because Refined runs its own photography and video production, an identity from us comes with a shooting style for product, people and place, and the same crew shoots to it. Vertex Lubricants, New Zealand's largest lubricants company, shows how that works over time: Refined handles their brand work alongside their content, filming, ads and website, so the same visual decisions carry through every film, still and campaign.

Templates and guidelines your team will use

An identity only stays consistent if the people using it every day can apply it quickly. Alongside the guidelines, we build working templates for social posts, stories, ads and web sections in your type and colour, so a new campaign starts from the brand rather than a blank canvas. We keep the guidelines short and practical: how to use the logo, which colours and type styles to reach for, how photography should look, and examples of the system done right. Master files are organised and named so a printer, a developer or a new hire can find the right version without having to ask.

Rolled out, then measured

A new identity is only finished when customers see it. We plan the rollout with you, then apply the identity to your website, social profiles, ad creative and content, so everything switches over together instead of drifting across months. Once it is live, enquiries, orders and return on spend are tracked in Refined Analytics, so you can see what changed after launch and where to push next. If you are not sure whether you need a new identity or a refresh, request a free strategy and we will tell you honestly.
