FAQ

Website maintenance questions, answered straight

What New Zealand business owners ask us before handing over the care of their website.

What does website maintenance include?
Website maintenance is the work that keeps a site secure, fast and working after launch: updates to the software, plugins or apps, backups, security and uptime monitoring, speed checks, fixes and content edits. Ours also covers SEO and tracking checks after changes, plus time each month for small improvements rather than upkeep alone.
What is a website care plan?
A website care plan is an ongoing monthly arrangement for looking after a site, so maintenance happens on a schedule instead of when something breaks. It usually bundles updates, backups, monitoring and a set amount of developer time. Ours is scoped to your platform and goals, and you can see where every hour goes.
How much does website maintenance cost in NZ?
It depends on the platform, the size of the site and how much you want changed each month. A small Webflow site needs far less care than a busy WooCommerce store with dozens of plugins. We quote once we understand the site and your goals, usually as a monthly care plan, and every hour is accounted for.
How often does a website need maintenance?
Most sites need attention every month, and backups and monitoring should run all the time. WordPress plugins and themes release updates often, and forms and tracking should be checked after any significant change. Shopify and Webflow need less technical upkeep, but apps, integrations and content still need regular care to stay accurate and fast.
Do Shopify and Webflow sites need maintenance?
Yes, though less than WordPress. Shopify and Webflow handle hosting, platform updates and core security for you. They do not look after your apps, theme, custom code, content, integrations, forms, tracking or page speed, and that is where most problems on those platforms start. That is also where our care work goes.
Can you look after a website someone else built?
Yes. Every site we take on starts with an audit, whoever built it. We check the platform, theme, plugins or apps, hosting, backups, speed, SEO settings and tracking, catch up anything overdue, then move to regular monthly care. If part of the site needs rebuilding rather than patching, we will tell you before you spend.
What happens if my website goes down or gets hacked?
We find the cause, restore a clean backup if needed, close the gap that let it happen and explain plainly what went wrong and what we changed. Uptime and security monitoring mean problems are usually spotted by an alert rather than a customer, and tested backups mean there is a safe version to go back to.
Can maintenance work affect my Google rankings?
It can, which is why it needs care. Rankings slip when an update breaks pages, a URL changes without a redirect or a setting blocks search engines. We check titles, redirects, indexing and speed whenever the site changes, watch Search Console for new errors, and keep development and SEO in the same team.
Do you make content changes and small improvements?
Yes. New pages, products, blog posts, sale banners, text and image changes and broken things fixed are all part of monthly care. We also set aside time for small improvements, such as faster templates or clearer forms. Requests go to a developer who already knows your site, not into a ticket queue.
Do you check tracking and analytics as part of maintenance?
Yes. Theme changes, plugin updates and new apps can quietly break GA4, Google Ads conversions or the Meta Pixel. After significant changes we check that forms, purchases and conversions still record correctly, so the numbers your SEO and ad decisions rely on stay accurate in Refined Analytics.

The problem

Most websites are launched, then left to look after themselves.

Updates get skipped, plugins and apps pile up, tracking breaks and nobody notices until enquiries dry up or the site goes down. Here is what usually goes wrong, and how we run it instead.

What usually goes wrong
  • –Updates skipped for months because nobody wants to break the site
  • –Plugins and apps piling up, some unused, some no longer supported
  • –Backups nobody has tested and no one watching security or uptime
  • –Tracking that quietly broke after a theme or plugin change
  • –Small edits that wait weeks because nobody owns the site
What we do instead
  • ✓Test updates on a staging copy, with a backup taken first
  • ✓Review plugins and apps, and remove what the site does not need
  • ✓Keep off-site backups we have test-restored, with uptime and security monitoring
  • ✓Check forms, conversions and analytics after every significant change
  • ✓Give your site a developer who knows it, and a plan for each month
How it works

Six steps from first audit to steady monthly care.

A lot of maintenance plans are an automatic update button and an invoice. Ours start with an audit and carry on as planned monthly work, coordinated with your SEO, ads and content because the same team runs them.

01
Audit

Platform, theme, plugins or apps, hosting, backups, speed, security, SEO settings and tracking reviewed, so we know what we are looking after and what needs catching up first.

02
Catch up

Overdue updates applied on a staging copy, unused plugins or apps removed, backups and monitoring set up and anything broken fixed before regular care starts.

03
Monitor

Uptime, speed, security, forms and tracking checked on a schedule, with alerts going to the developers who look after the site.

04
Update

Core, theme and plugin updates tested before they reach customers, with a backup taken first and a way to roll back if anything misbehaves.

05
Improve

Content edits, fixes and small improvements each month, from new pages and banners to faster templates and clearer forms, prioritised with you.

06
Report

What was updated, fixed and improved, alongside the enquiries and sales the site brings in, reported live in Refined Analytics.

Our approach

Update, protect, improve.

Three jobs, one team. Every month the site is kept current, kept safe and made a little better, by developers who work alongside your SEO and ads.

Update

Tested before it goes live

WordPress updates tested on a staging copy, Shopify theme changes previewed and Webflow changes checked on staging before they are published, with a backup taken first.

Protect

Backups, security and monitoring

Off-site backups that are tested, security and uptime monitoring, and admin access and SSL kept in order, so problems are found by an alert, not a customer.

Improve

A little better each month

Fixes, content edits and small improvements planned with you, from faster templates to clearer forms, with results reported live in Refined Analytics.

What it costs

Priced on the work. Shown to the hour.

A small Webflow site and a busy WooCommerce store need very different care. We quote once we understand the site, its platform and how much you want changed each month, and you see where every hour goes.

Website care in New Zealand

What good website maintenance actually involves.

Website maintenance is the ongoing work that keeps a site secure, fast, accurate and earning once it is live: updates, backups, security and uptime monitoring, fixes, content edits and small improvements, plus the checks that stop routine changes quietly breaking your SEO or tracking. Done properly, it is not an automatic update button and a monthly invoice. It is a developer who knows your site, working to a plan you can see. We are a Kiwi-owned team in Grey Lynn, Auckland, looking after WordPress, Shopify and Webflow sites for businesses across New Zealand, and our developers sit beside the people running SEO, technical SEO, Google Ads and Meta ads. So a change to your site is checked against the rankings and campaigns it affects, and the conversion work that improves it is planned by the same people who keep it running.

Updates, plugins and apps, tested before they go live

Most broken websites break during an update: a plugin that clashes with the theme, an app that leaves code behind when it is removed, a server upgrade the site was never tested on. On WordPress we test core, theme and plugin updates on a staging copy first, take a backup before anything touches the live site, and review the plugin list as we go, because the safest plugin is the one you no longer need. Shopify and Webflow update their own platforms, so the work there goes into apps, themes, integrations and custom code. Sites we inherit get an audit from our WordPress developers or Shopify developers before regular care starts, so we know exactly what we are looking after.

Security, backups and monitoring

Good security is mostly routine. Off-site backups are taken on a schedule and test-restored, so there is something safe to roll back to. Uptime monitoring raises an alert when the site stops responding, and on WordPress, security monitoring watches for malware, suspicious logins and files that should not have changed. Admin accounts are reviewed, old users removed and SSL kept valid. None of this is visible when it works, which is exactly why it gets skipped on sites nobody owns. When something does go wrong, a clean backup and a clear record of recent changes turn a crisis into a fix.

Fixes, content edits and small improvements each month

Maintenance that only prevents problems leaves a lot of value on the table. Each month we handle the edits you send through, such as new pages, products, blog posts, sale banners and broken things fixed, and we set aside time for small improvements that make the site work harder: a faster template, a shorter form, a clearer call to action, a landing page for a new campaign. Requests go to a developer who already knows how your site is built, so small changes do not need a briefing session first. Bigger pieces of work are scoped separately, so you always know what you are paying for.

SEO-safe changes and tracking that stays accurate

Small site changes can quietly cost rankings and break reporting. A page gets renamed without a redirect, a plugin update resets a setting, a staging site gets indexed, a new theme drops a conversion tag. We check titles, meta, redirects, indexing and Core Web Vitals whenever the site changes, and watch Search Console for new errors. We also check that GA4, Google Ads conversions and the Meta Pixel with Conversions API still record enquiries and sales after updates, so the numbers your marketing decisions rely on stay trustworthy in Refined Analytics.

WordPress, Shopify or Webflow: what each one needs

WordPress gives you the most control and needs the most care: core, theme and plugin updates, hosting, security and backups are all yours to look after, so a care plan matters most here. Shopify handles hosting, security and platform updates, so care is mostly apps, theme updates, product data, speed and tracking. Webflow also handles hosting and security, so care is mostly content, CMS structure, forms, integrations and custom code. We build and look after all three, so if your site costs more to maintain than it should, we will say so. Our comparison of Webflow vs WordPress covers the trade-offs if you are weighing up a move.
