WHY REFINED

A growth team with a production studio inside it.

We started Refined because businesses kept being sold the same recycled packages by agencies they never actually spoke to. So we built the opposite: a Kiwi-owned team in Grey Lynn where the strategists, media buyers, developers, shooters and editors sit together, and you talk to all of them.

Everything in-house
Strategy, film, photo, websites and paid media from one team. Creative is built around what the data says, not handed over by a separate studio.
Direct access
You work with the people doing the work. No account managers passing messages along.
Bespoke, not packaged
Every plan is scoped to your market and margins. If a channel will not pay its way for you, we say so before you spend.
Reported live
Enquiries, orders and return on spend in Refined Analytics as they happen, with a weekly report that says what we did and what we are changing next.

How we report

You always know what is happening, and why.

No black box and no monthly PDF that arrives too late to act on. Refined Analytics shows enquiries, orders and return on spend as they happen, and a weekly report from the people doing the work explains what we changed and what is next.

FAQ

Ecommerce questions, answered straight

What New Zealand brands ask us before building an online store.

Do you build Shopify stores?
Yes. Shopify is our usual recommendation for product brands because it is reliable, secure and easy for your team to run, and we are a Shopify Partner agency. We also build on WooCommerce and Webflow when they suit your range or content needs better.
Shopify or WooCommerce: which is better?
Shopify is hosted and managed, so there is less maintenance and it scales easily. WooCommerce runs on WordPress, giving more control and stronger content features but needing more upkeep. For most New Zealand product brands we recommend Shopify; for content-led stores WooCommerce can make sense.
Can you move our existing store to Shopify?
Yes. We plan the migration so products, customers and content move across where the platforms allow, map 301 redirects from every old URL and check SEO before and after launch to protect your rankings.
Do you provide product photography?
Yes. Our in-house team shoots product, lifestyle and campaign photography and video, so the store launches with imagery made to sell rather than supplier files.
Will the store be set up for SEO?
Yes. We structure collections and product pages for search, write titles and descriptions, add product structured data and set up redirects. Ongoing ecommerce SEO is available from the same team if you want to keep building organic sales.
Can you set up Google Shopping and Meta ads?
Yes. We connect your product feed to Google Merchant Center and Meta catalogues, install GA4, Google Ads conversions and the Meta Pixel with Conversions API, then run the campaigns. Because the same team builds the store and runs the ads, tracking and product data are set up to work together.
Do you set up email marketing flows?
Yes. We set up Klaviyo with core automated flows such as welcome, abandoned cart, browse abandonment and post-purchase emails, and can run your campaigns and flows after launch as part of ecommerce marketing.
How much does an ecommerce website cost in NZ?
It depends on the size of your range, how custom the design and functionality need to be, any migration or integrations, and whether we produce the product photography and copy. A Shopify store on a customised theme is a much smaller project than a bespoke build. We quote once we understand what the store has to do, and show you where every hour goes.
How do you design an ecommerce website?
We start with your range, margins and customers, then design the product page, cart and checkout first, mobile first. The store is built on a lean Shopify theme with payments, shipping and GST configured, the product feed, tracking and Klaviyo are connected, and it launches with redirects mapped and SEO checked before and after.
Can you use Shopify in New Zealand?
Yes. Shopify runs online stores for New Zealand brands in NZ dollars, with GST, shipping rates and payments set up for local customers, and it connects to the accounting, shipping and email tools NZ businesses already use. It is our usual recommendation for product brands.

The problem

Most online stores are built to launch, not to sell.

New Zealand brands are sold a theme, a product import and a go-live date. Then the orders do not come. Here is what usually goes wrong, and how we run it instead.

What usually goes wrong
  • –A pretty store with a checkout nobody finishes
  • –Slow pages weighed down by apps and oversized images
  • –Product pages that describe without persuading
  • –No feed, no tracking, so ads cannot start on day one
  • –A developer who builds it and a marketer who blames it
What we do instead
  • ✓Design the product page, cart and checkout first
  • ✓Keep the theme lean so it loads fast on a phone
  • ✓Write and shoot content that answers the buyer's questions
  • ✓Connect feeds, tracking and email before launch
  • ✓Build it and market it with the same team, reported live
How it works

Six steps from product range to a store that sells.

Most developers hand over a theme and leave the marketing to someone else. We plan every store around your goals, margins, SEO, ad landing pages, content and Klaviyo flows, because the same team runs them after launch.

01
Plan

Your range, margins, goals and customers, plus the SEO keywords, ad landing pages, content and Klaviyo flows the store has to support, so the build is scoped around what will move units.

02
Design

Collection, product, cart and checkout flows designed mobile first, with the proof, reviews and shipping details placed where shoppers decide.

03
Build

Shopify theme developed clean and fast, products and variants loaded, payments, shipping and GST configured, apps chosen with restraint.

04
Connect

Google Merchant Center, Meta catalogue, GA4, Conversions API and Klaviyo connected and tested so marketing can start the day you launch.

05
Launch

Redirects mapped, SEO checked before and after, checkout tested on every device and payment method, then live.

06
Grow

Conversion testing, SEO, Google Shopping, Meta ads and email run by the same team, with orders and return visible live in Refined Analytics.

Our approach

Design, build, measure.

Three disciplines, one team. The store is designed around how your customers buy, built to be fast and easy to run, and measured on what it sells.

Design

Product page, cart, checkout first

We design the pages shoppers actually land on and decide on, mobile first, with proof, shipping and returns placed where the decision happens. The homepage follows.

Build

Shopify, lean and connected

A Shopify Partner build: clean theme code, restrained apps, payments, shipping and GST configured, and Merchant Center, Meta, GA4 and Klaviyo connected before launch.

Measure

Orders and return, live

Every order is attributed to its channel and page in Refined Analytics as it happens. You see what the store sells and hear weekly what we changed to sell more.

What it costs

Priced on the store. Shown to the hour.

No packages and no hidden fees. Your investment is set by what the store has to do, and you see where every hour goes: strategy, design, development, content and tracking.

Ecommerce website design in New Zealand

What good ecommerce website design looks like for a New Zealand brand.

An online store has one job: turn the people who arrive into people who buy, at a margin that leaves room to grow. Most ecommerce website design in New Zealand is briefed as a design project and judged on the day it launches. We brief it as a sales project and judge it on orders. That changes the platform we recommend, the pages we design first, the content we write and shoot, and what gets connected before go-live. Most developers hand over a theme and leave the marketing to someone else. We plan the store around the SEO, Google Shopping and Meta ads, content and Klaviyo email flows that will drive its sales, because the same team runs them after launch, so there is nobody to blame but ourselves if it does not sell. As a Shopify Partner based in Grey Lynn, Auckland, we build stores for brands across New Zealand and, where they trade there, Australia.

Why we usually recommend Shopify

Shopify is hosted, secure and handles payments, shipping and GST without a developer on call. It scales from a first range to thousands of SKUs, its checkout is one of the highest converting in the world, and its app and integration ecosystem covers almost every tool a New Zealand brand uses. We are a Shopify Partner and build on it daily, which means we know where the platform needs setting up properly: duplicate collection URLs, canonical tags, image weight, app bloat and the tracking gaps that break attribution. If you already have a store and need theme work, a migration or custom features, our Shopify development team handles that too. We also build on WooCommerce and Webflow, the platforms behind our website design work, when a content-heavy site or an unusual range suits them better, and we will tell you which before you spend.

Design the moments that sell: product page, cart, checkout

Homepages get the attention in design reviews, but most shoppers never see yours. They land on a product or collection page from Google, an ad or an email, and decide there. So we design those pages first: imagery that shows the product in use, copy that answers the questions a shop assistant would be asked, reviews, shipping and returns where they are needed, and a clear path to the cart. The cart and checkout are tested on real phones with real payment methods, because a store that loses people at the last step is just an expensive catalogue.

Content and conversion: the Proferlo lesson

Proferlo Furniture sells beds, storage and living room furniture online across New Zealand and Australia. The store had traffic but was not converting it. We rewrote and restructured the content across collections and product pages so each one answered what shoppers were asking and made the next step obvious. With Meta and Google running alongside it from the same team, the business saw 3x online revenue growth after 60 days. The lesson for any store build is simple: launch with content written and shot to sell, not supplier descriptions and placeholder images.

Ready for search, Shopping, Meta and email on day one

A store that launches without its product feed, tracking and email flows connected starts behind. We structure collections and product pages for search, write titles and descriptions to rank, add product structured data and map redirects from any old URLs. The product feed is connected to Google Merchant Center and Meta catalogues, GA4 and the Conversions API are installed and tested, and Klaviyo is set up with welcome, abandoned cart and post-purchase flows. When the store goes live, the marketing can start the same day, and every order is attributed to the channel that produced it.

Measured on orders, reported live

Every store we build reports into Refined Analytics: orders, revenue and return by channel, campaign and page, live rather than in a monthly PDF. After launch we stay on to look after updates and new products, run conversion rate optimisation to lift the store's sales, and manage SEO, Google Shopping, Meta ads and email if you want one team across all of it. You hear from us weekly on what moved and what we changed, and you deal directly with the people doing the work. If the store is not earning, you will know first, and so will we.

A furniture retailer selling online across New Zealand and Australia, competing with national chains. We rewrote the store's content, ran Meta and Google alongside it and tracked every order back to its source. The store started doing what it was built for.
