WHY REFINED

A growth team with a production studio inside it.

We started Refined because businesses kept being sold the same recycled packages by agencies they never actually spoke to. So we built the opposite: a Kiwi-owned team in Grey Lynn where the strategists, media buyers, developers, shooters and editors sit together, and you talk to all of them.

Everything in-house
Strategy, film, photo, websites and paid media from one team. Creative is built around what the data says, not handed over by a separate studio.
Direct access
You work with the people doing the work. No account managers passing messages along.
Bespoke, not packaged
Every plan is scoped to your market and margins. If a channel will not pay its way for you, we say so before you spend.
Reported live
Enquiries, orders and return on spend in Refined Analytics as they happen, with a weekly report that says what we did and what we are changing next.

How we report

You always know what is happening, and why.

No black box and no monthly PDF that arrives too late to act on. Refined Analytics shows enquiries, orders and return on spend as they happen, and a weekly report from the people doing the work explains what we changed and what is next.

FAQ

WordPress developer questions, answered straight

What New Zealand business owners ask us before hiring a WordPress developer.

What does a WordPress developer do?
A WordPress developer builds, customises and looks after WordPress sites beyond what a theme's settings allow. That covers custom themes and blocks, WooCommerce stores, plugins and integrations, migrations, speed fixes, security and updates. Our team also sets up tracking, so your marketing can measure enquiries and sales accurately.
Should my site be on WordPress, Shopify or Webflow?
It depends on what the site has to do. WordPress suits content-heavy sites, custom functionality such as bookings or memberships, and teams who already know it. Shopify is usually better if selling products is the core of the business, and Webflow suits fast, design-led marketing sites. We build on all three and recommend what fits.
Do you build custom WordPress themes?
Yes. We build custom themes with blocks and patterns for the WordPress block editor (Gutenberg), so your team can create and edit pages without breaking the design. If your team already uses a page builder, we can work with it and keep it tidy. The code is documented, so anyone can pick it up later.
Do you build and fix WooCommerce stores?
Yes. We set up WooCommerce with products, payments, shipping and GST, connect it to your accounting, email and ad platforms, and fix slow or broken stores. If a store has outgrown WooCommerce, we will tell you, and we can move it to Shopify with every old URL redirected.
Can you move my site from Wix or Squarespace to WordPress?
Yes. We move pages, posts, products, images and forms across where the platforms allow, map a 301 redirect for every old URL and check rankings before and after launch. We also handle moves the other way, such as WordPress or WooCommerce to Shopify, when that suits the business better.
Will a redesign hurt my Google rankings?
Not if it is planned properly. Rankings usually drop after a relaunch because URLs change without redirects or content goes missing. We crawl the old site first, map a 301 redirect for every URL, carry over titles, meta and internal links, and track rankings and traffic before and after launch.
Why is my WordPress site slow, and can you fix it?
Usually it comes down to too many plugins, oversized images, no caching or hosting that cannot keep up. We audit the plugins, theme and hosting, then fix what affects Core Web Vitals, such as image sizes, unused plugins, render-blocking scripts and caching. We measure speed before and after, so you can see the difference.
How much does a WordPress developer cost in NZ?
It depends on the job. A plugin or speed fix is a small piece of work, while a custom theme, WooCommerce store or migration is a project. We quote once we understand your site, content and goals, either per project or as a monthly care plan, and you see where every hour goes.
Do you offer WordPress maintenance and care plans?
Yes. Care plans cover core, theme and plugin updates tested on a staging copy first, backups, uptime and security monitoring, and ongoing fixes and improvements. We can also set up or move your hosting so it suits the site. You deal directly with the developers, and care can sit alongside SEO and ads.
Do you only work with Auckland businesses?
No. We are based in Grey Lynn, Auckland, and work on WordPress sites for businesses across New Zealand. Most of the work happens remotely, with video calls, staging links and live reporting, and we can meet in person or shoot new content on site when a project needs it.

The problem

Most WordPress work is bought as quick fixes and judged on nothing.

New Zealand businesses get sold another plugin, another theme tweak and another invoice. Nobody checks whether the site wins more work afterwards. Here is what usually goes wrong, and how we run it instead.

What usually goes wrong
  • –Plugins piled up for years, many out of date or doing the same job
  • –Updates skipped because nobody wants to break the site
  • –Slow pages on mobile and Core Web Vitals nobody has measured
  • –A redesign that dropped old URLs, and the rankings with them
  • –No tested backups and no one watching security
What we do instead
  • ✓Audit plugins, theme and hosting before writing a line of code
  • ✓Test every update on a staging copy before it touches the live site
  • ✓Fix speed at the source: images, scripts, caching and hosting
  • ✓Map a 301 redirect for every old URL before any relaunch
  • ✓Keep tested backups and report what the site brings in, live
How it works

Six steps from scope to a site that performs.

Plenty of WordPress developers work down a ticket list. We plan every build, migration or fix around your ads, SEO, content and email flows, because the same team runs them.

01
Audit

Your site, theme, plugins, hosting and tracking reviewed against your goals and the ads, SEO, content and email that feed it, then scope agreed in plain language.

02
Plan

Platform check, page designs, the custom blocks you need, a short plugin list and, for any migration or redesign, a full URL map.

03
Build

Theme built or refined in clean, documented code on a staging site, content moved across and plugins kept to the ones that earn their place.

04
Connect

GA4, ad conversions, forms, CRM and your email platform wired up and tested, so every enquiry and sale is counted once.

05
Launch

Speed, device, form, redirect and tracking checks on every template before the site goes live or the migration cuts over.

06
Care

Tested updates, backups, security, speed and SEO work after launch, reported live alongside the enquiries and sales the site brings in.

Our approach

Audit, build, look after.

Three disciplines, one team. Every piece of WordPress work is scoped against what it should earn, built lean and editable, and looked after once it is live.

Audit

Plugins, hosting and speed first

Every plugin, the theme, hosting, Core Web Vitals, SEO and tracking checked first. Then we agree in plain language what will change and what it should do for enquiries or sales.

Build

Lean code, fewer plugins

Custom themes and blocks that stay editable, documented code, a short plugin list and integrations wired up with clean data, all built on staging first.

Look after

Updates, security and results

Tested updates, backups, uptime and security monitoring, with enquiries and sales reported live in Refined Analytics so you can see what the work changed.

What it costs

Quoted on the scope. Every hour accounted for.

A plugin fix, a WooCommerce store and a full redesign are very different jobs. We quote once we understand your site, content and goals, as a project or a monthly care plan, and you see where every hour goes.

WordPress development in New Zealand

What a good WordPress developer does for a New Zealand business.

A WordPress developer builds, extends and looks after WordPress sites: custom themes and blocks, WooCommerce stores, plugins and integrations, migrations, speed fixes, security and updates. That is the job description. The point of the job is different. Every hour should make the site faster, safer, easier to edit or better at turning visitors into enquiries and sales, and you should be able to see which. We are an Auckland team based in Grey Lynn, working with businesses across New Zealand, and our developers sit beside the strategists, designers and media buyers who grow the sites they build. So the work is planned around your SEO, the landing pages your Google Ads and Meta ads send traffic to, your content and your email flows, which most WordPress developers leave to someone else. It is also why we set up tracking before launch, and why we report on enquiries and sales rather than tickets closed.

Custom themes and block builds your team can edit

Most WordPress sites run on a bought theme stretched well past what it was built for, propped up by a long list of plugins. The fix is rarely another theme. It is a theme built for your brand, with custom blocks and patterns in the block editor (Gutenberg), so your team can build a landing page, add a case study or update a price list without a developer and without breaking the design. If your team already knows a page builder, we can work with it and keep it tidy. Everything is documented, so the next person to touch the code understands it. New sites start with our website design process, and if you mainly sell products, our Shopify developers will tell you honestly whether WooCommerce or Shopify suits you better.

Migrations and redesigns that keep your rankings

We move sites to WordPress from Wix, Squarespace and older builds, bringing pages, posts, products, images and forms across where the platforms allow. We also move stores from WooCommerce to Shopify when a business has outgrown it, because sometimes the right answer is a different platform. The part that protects your revenue is the part most migrations and redesigns skip: a 301 redirect mapped for every old URL, titles, meta and internal links carried over, rankings benchmarked before launch and checked again after, and tracking rebuilt so the first week is measured properly. Done well, Google and your customers barely notice the move.

Speed, Core Web Vitals and plugin bloat

Slow WordPress sites are usually slow for the same reasons: plugins loading scripts on every page, oversized images, no caching, render-blocking fonts and scripts, and hosting that cannot keep up. We audit the plugins, theme and hosting to find what is actually slowing the site down, then fix what affects Core Web Vitals: images resized and lazy loaded, unused plugins removed or replaced, scripts deferred, caching and a CDN set up, and hosting changed if it is the bottleneck. A plugin audit also closes security gaps and often cuts licence costs. Faster pages convert better and rank better, so speed work pays twice.

When WordPress is the right platform, and when it is not

WordPress is the right call for content-heavy sites with lots of pages, articles or resources, for functionality like bookings, memberships or directories, and for teams who already know it well. WooCommerce makes sense when content does much of the selling or you need full control over the checkout and your data. If selling products is the core of the business, Shopify is usually the better choice because hosting, security and updates are handled for you, and we will say so. If you want a fast, design-led marketing site with no plugins or updates to manage, Webflow often fits better. We build on all three, so the recommendation comes from what the site has to do, not from what we prefer to build.

Security, updates, hosting and care plans

Most WordPress problems start after launch, when updates stop and nobody owns the site. Our care plans cover core, theme and plugin updates tested on a staging copy first, backups that are tested rather than just taken, uptime and security monitoring, and hosting set up or moved to suit the site. Every site we build or take on also gets GA4, Google Ads conversions and the Meta Pixel with Conversions API set up and tested, so enquiries and sales show up in Refined Analytics against the channel that produced them. You deal directly with the people doing the work, and care can be combined with SEO, conversion rate optimisation and ads so the site keeps getting better, not just maintained.
