WHY REFINED

A growth team with a production studio inside it.

We started Refined because businesses kept being sold the same recycled packages by agencies they never actually spoke to. So we built the opposite: a Kiwi-owned team in Grey Lynn where the strategists, media buyers, developers, shooters and editors sit together, and you talk to all of them.

Everything in-house
Strategy, film, photo, websites and paid media from one team. Creative is built around what the data says, not handed over by a separate studio.
Direct access
You work with the people doing the work. No account managers passing messages along.
Bespoke, not packaged
Every plan is scoped to your market and margins. If a channel will not pay its way for you, we say so before you spend.
Reported live
Enquiries, orders and return on spend in Refined Analytics as they happen, with a weekly report that says what we did and what we are changing next.

FAQ

Brand film and TVC questions, answered straight

What New Zealand marketers ask us before commissioning cinema-quality production.

What makes cinema quality different from regular video production?
Cinema-quality production uses cinema cameras and lenses, professional lighting, careful art direction and a full post-production process with colour grading and sound design.
Can we use cinema-quality content across digital channels or just TV?
Both. TV commercials are made to fixed broadcast lengths and technical specifications. Digital versions can be any length and are usually cut into several versions for YouTube, Meta and other platforms.
Do you handle TVC media buying and broadcast distribution?
Our in-house team runs paid digital campaigns on Meta, Google and YouTube, so we can put your film in front of the right audience and track results. Broadcast files are prepared to the specification of each network.
What if our brand positioning is not clear yet?
That is common. We can start with brand positioning to clarify your message, then build the film around it.
Can you provide actors, locations and full creative direction?
Yes. We handle casting, location scouting and the logistics of the shoot as part of pre-production.
How do we know if our business is ready for cinema-quality production?
If you have a clear message, a defined audience and a plan for where the film will run, you are ready. If any of those is missing, a strategy call is the place to start.
What is a brand film?
A brand film is a short film that tells the story behind a brand rather than selling a single product or offer. It is built to make people feel something about who you are, using cinema-quality camera work, casting, music and sound. Brand films usually run on your website, YouTube and paid social, and can be cut down into TV commercials and shorter ads.
What is commercial video production?
Commercial video production is making video that sells or builds a brand: TV commercials, brand films, online ads and promotional videos. It covers the idea and script, casting and locations, filming, and the edit, colour and sound, then delivery in every format the campaign needs, from broadcast to vertical social cuts.
How much does a TV commercial cost in NZ?
It depends on the idea. The main factors are the number of scenes and locations, professional talent, crew size and camera package, and post-production: colour, sound design, music licensing and the number of cut-downs. Broadcast airtime is bought separately from production. We scope the concept with you and quote the whole production before pre-production begins.
What is the difference between a TVC and a social ad?
A TVC is made to fixed broadcast lengths and technical specifications, and is usually watched with the sound on. A social ad is built for a feed: vertical or square, captioned for sound-off viewing and hooked in the first two seconds. The strongest campaigns plan both from one production, so the TV spot and the social cuts share one idea.

The problem

Most brand films are made for the agency reel, not the brand.

New Zealand brands pay for cinematic production and get a film that looks expensive, says little and never runs anywhere that matters. Here is what usually goes wrong, and how we run it differently.

What usually goes wrong
  • –A concept chosen because it looks good, not because it is true to the brand
  • –Positioning that was never clear before the cameras rolled
  • –One sixty-second cut and nothing for YouTube, social or ads
  • –Production and media bought from different people who never speak
  • –No idea what the film did for perception or sales
What we do instead
  • ✓Clarify positioning first, then build the idea on it
  • ✓Cast, scout and storyboard so every frame earns its place
  • ✓Shoot once for broadcast, YouTube, vertical and cutdowns
  • ✓Plan the media alongside the film, by the same team
  • ✓Track reach, brand search and revenue in Refined Analytics

Brand films and TVCs in New Zealand

What commercial video production should do for a New Zealand brand.

Cinema-quality is a description of craft, not a strategy. Cinema cameras and lenses, careful lighting, real art direction and a proper colour and sound finish are what make a film feel considered rather than produced. But a brand film or television commercial only earns its budget when the idea underneath it is true to the brand and the finished film is put in front of the right people. Refined makes brand films and TVCs from a growth agency in Auckland, which means the positioning, the creative and the media plan are built by the same team, in that order.

Positioning before production

The most expensive mistake in brand film is shooting before the brand is clear. If your positioning is still a debate, we start there, with brand positioning work that settles who you are for, what you stand for and why anyone should care. Only then do we develop concepts. The result is a film that says one thing with conviction instead of five things politely. When the positioning is already clear, discovery is short and we move straight into creative development.

An idea that survives the edit

Concept, script and storyboard are where a film is really made. We develop ideas that can be told in sixty seconds, thirty seconds and six seconds, because that is how a campaign is actually consumed across television, YouTube and social. You see the storyboard and approve the script before pre-production begins, so there are no surprises in the edit. Casting, locations, wardrobe and props are planned to serve the idea rather than decorate it.

Craft on the day

On set, our in-house crew shoots on cinema cameras with professional lighting, grip and sound, and a director whose attention is on performance rather than equipment. We plan coverage for every format the campaign needs, so vertical and square versions are shot deliberately rather than cropped as an afterthought. Vertex Lubricants, New Zealand's largest lubricants company, trusted us with their brand and workshop films and the stills that sit alongside them, as part of a wider brand, website, advertising and growth programme we run for them.

Finishing that holds up on any screen

Post-production is where cinema-quality is proven. Colour grading gives the film a consistent, considered look from a large television to a phone held on a bus. Sound design and licensed music are mixed to broadcast standards and to the quieter reality of social feeds, where captions carry the message. Every deliverable is exported to the exact technical specification of the broadcaster or platform it will run on.

Media planned by the people who made the film

A beautiful film with no media plan is an expensive secret. Because Refined also runs YouTube, Meta and Google campaigns, your film is launched with a plan for reach, frequency and audience from day one, and tracked through to brand search, enquiries and revenue in Refined Analytics. For Proferlo Furniture, content built this way sat alongside paid media and search in one programme, and the business saw 3x online revenue growth after 60 days. If you do not get results, you do not pay.
