WHY REFINED

A growth team with its own crew, ready to travel.

Refined is a Kiwi-owned team in Grey Lynn, Auckland, where the strategists, media buyers, developers, shooters and editors sit together. When the shoot is in Queenstown, the people who planned it are the people on location, and you talk to all of them.

Everything in-house
Strategy, film, photo, websites and paid media from one team, so the shoot is planned around what your ads and booking pages need.
Direct access
You deal with the people doing the work before, during and after the trip south. No account managers passing messages along.
Bespoke, not packaged
Every shoot is scoped to your season, audience and margins. If a format will not pay its way, we say so before you spend.
Reported live
Bookings, enquiries and return on spend in Refined Analytics as they happen, with a weekly report on what we changed and why.

FAQ

Filming in Queenstown: the practical questions.

Crew, travel, drones, weather and cost, answered before you book anything.

Do you have a video crew based in Queenstown?
No. Refined is based in Grey Lynn, Auckland, and our crew travels to Queenstown and the wider Southern Lakes for each shoot. Strategy, scripting and reporting happen on video calls, so you work with the same team from the first conversation to the final report, and travel is costed into your quote before anything is booked.
Can an Auckland team make video for a Queenstown business?
Yes. Most of the work behind a good film happens before and after the shoot: strategy, scripting, planning, editing, distribution and reporting. We do that remotely, then travel down for the shoot days with every shot planned. A Queenstown videographer can suit a simple one-day job. When you need a concept, a crew and versions for several channels, a production team is the better fit.
What types of video production do you offer in Queenstown?
Experience films for tourism and adventure operators, stay and property films for lodges, hotels and real estate, venue films for weddings and events, brand films for outdoor and adventure brands, and vineyard films for Central Otago wineries. One shoot can also deliver vertical social cuts, ad versions and stills.
How much does video production in Queenstown cost?
It depends on the brief. The main factors are the number and length of films, how many shoot days and locations are involved, crew travel, whether you need drone work or talent, and how many edits and cutdowns you want. We scope every project to your goals and give you a clear quote, travel included, before anything is booked.
Can you film with a drone in Queenstown?
Where the rules and the location allow, yes. Drone work in Queenstown is planned around Civil Aviation Authority rules, airspace around Queenstown Airport and any permissions a location needs, from landowners, the council or the Department of Conservation. We confirm what is possible in pre-production and plan ground-based alternatives, so the film never depends on a single flight or a calm day.
When is the best time of year to film in Queenstown?
It depends on what you sell. Summer gives long evenings and lively locations. Autumn brings Arrowtown's colour and the Central Otago harvest. Winter is for snow, ski fields and fireside interiors, with short days. Spring is quieter, with snow still on the peaks. If your business changes with the seasons, two shorter shoots often work better than one long one.
What happens if the weather turns on shoot day?
Alpine weather changes fast, so every Queenstown schedule has a weather plan: interior or sheltered scenes that can move into a bad-weather slot, flexible timing for aerial and landscape shots, and a backup day where the budget allows. We agree the plan with you before any travel is booked.
Can you film at Central Otago wineries?
Yes. A Queenstown shoot can include vineyards and cellar doors in Gibbston, Bannockburn or elsewhere in Central Otago. Autumn harvest and spring frost season both make strong footage, and one trip can cover the vineyard, the winemaking and the cellar door experience.
Can you shoot photos and video on the same trip?
Yes. Capturing stills alongside video keeps your website, booking pages, listings and ads consistent, and gets more out of the travel, locations and talent you are already paying for.
Which formats will we receive?
Files are prepared for where they will run: widescreen for your website and YouTube, vertical for Reels, TikTok and Stories, square and short cutdowns for ads, and versions for booking pages and listings where you need them.

The catch

In Queenstown, the scenery is the easy part.

Every business in town can show the lake and the mountains. A film earns its place when it shows why someone should book you, buy from you or stay with you, and then reaches the right people. Here is where Queenstown video usually goes wrong, and what we do instead.

Where it goes wrong
  • –The same lake and mountain shots every competitor already uses
  • –Scenery first, and your actual experience or product an afterthought
  • –One summer shoot expected to sell all four seasons
  • –A hero film with nothing cut for booking pages, social or ads
  • –No way to tell whether it brought in a single booking or enquiry
How we run it
  • ✓Start with who buys, when they decide and where they will watch
  • ✓Put your experience, rooms or product first, with the landscape in support
  • ✓Plan shoot days around light, weather and season, with a backup plan
  • ✓Shoot once, then deliver the hero film, vertical cuts, stills and ad versions
  • ✓Run the ads ourselves and report bookings and enquiries live

How a Queenstown shoot works

Planned remotely. Shot in the Southern Lakes.

Everything that can be done before the crew travels is done before the crew travels, so shoot days go into filming, not working things out.

01
Strategy call

We start on a video call: what the film needs to achieve, who books or buys, and where they will see it. Then we agree the formats.

02
Plan

Script, shot list, locations, talent, permits and a weather plan, all signed off by you before any flights are booked.

03
Shoot

The crew travels down from Auckland with cinema cameras, lighting and sound, and works to the light: early starts, golden hour and the weather windows in between.

04
Edit

Edit, colour grade, sound design and music back in our Grey Lynn studio, with review rounds built into the schedule.

05
Launch

Versions cut for your website, booking pages, YouTube, Reels and ads, then launched across the channels we manage for you.

Video production in Queenstown

What it takes to film well in Queenstown.

Queenstown sells on scenery, which is exactly why scenery alone does not sell. Every tourism operator, lodge and venue in the Wakatipu basin can post a drone shot of the lake. What makes someone book is seeing what it is actually like to do it, stay there or own it. Refined is an Auckland video production team inside a growth agency. We travel to Queenstown for the shoot, and every brief starts with the same two questions: what does this film need to make happen, and how will we know it worked?

Who it is for

Tourism and adventure operators need the experience from the guest's point of view, cut into short social video that works in a feed. Lodges and hotels need the stay itself: the room at first light, the view from the deck, the fire at night. Wedding and event venues need films that let couples and planners walk the space from another city or country. Outdoor and adventure brands want their gear filmed in real conditions. Real estate agents and developers need property films for buyers who often live somewhere else. Central Otago wineries, from Gibbston to Bannockburn, need the vineyard, the people and the cellar door through the seasons.

Landscape and light

Queenstown's light is the best and hardest part of filming here. The mountains put valleys into shade early, the lake throws light back at the lens, and a clear morning can cloud over within the hour. We plan shot lists around the sun's path, check angles before the crew arrives, and build the day around early starts and golden hour rather than flat midday light. Landscape shots support the story rather than replace it, so the film still works on a phone with the sound off.

Drone and aerial work

Aerial shots are an obvious draw in Queenstown, and they take careful planning here. Drone flights are planned around Civil Aviation Authority rules, airspace around Queenstown Airport and any permissions a location needs, whether from a landowner, the council or the Department of Conservation. We confirm what is possible in pre-production, plan flights around wind and weather, and keep ground-based alternatives on the shot list, so the film never depends on a single flight.

Shooting through the seasons

Each season gives Queenstown a different look, and the right one depends on what you sell. Summer brings long evenings, with daylight past 9pm in midsummer, along with the busiest trails, lakefront and roads. Autumn turns Arrowtown gold and brings harvest to the Central Otago vineyards. Winter means snow on the Remarkables and Coronet Peak, short days and early shadows, so schedules are tight and weather days matter. Spring is quieter, with snow still on the peaks and frost-fighting nights in the vineyards. If your business changes with the seasons, two shorter shoots often beat one long one.

An Auckland crew, a Queenstown shoot

Strategy, scripting, planning and reporting happen on video calls, so you deal with the same people from the first conversation to the final report. Every film is given a job in the funnel before it is shot: a hero film to make people want to come, shorter cuts that drive bookings and enquiries, and walk-throughs or testimonials that answer the last questions. The crew travels down for the shoot days, the edit happens back in Grey Lynn, and the same team then puts the film to work in your Meta ads, Google campaigns and social channels, with bookings, enquiries and revenue tracked in Refined Analytics.
