WHY REFINED

Photographers who work next to the people running your ads.

Photo, video, websites and paid media from one team, so every image is shot for the channel it will run in.
Direct access
You deal with the people planning and shooting your images, not an account manager passing messages along.
Bespoke, not packaged
Every shoot is scoped to your business, your peak seasons and your budget. If something will not pay its way, we say so before you spend.
Reported live

FAQ

Queenstown photography questions, answered straight

Travel, timing, seasons, permits and cost, before you book a shoot.

Can an Auckland team shoot in Queenstown?
Yes. Refined is based in Grey Lynn, Auckland, and travels to Queenstown, Arrowtown, Wānaka and the wider Southern Lakes for commercial photography. The planning happens on calls and in a shared shot list before we arrive, so the time on location is spent shooting.
What kinds of businesses do you photograph in Queenstown?
We shoot commercial work for tourism and activity operators, hotels, lodges and holiday homes, property developers and real estate marketing, retailers and product brands, and wineries, restaurants and food producers across Central Otago. We do not shoot weddings.
When is the best time of year for a shoot in Queenstown?
It depends on what you sell. Winter suits ski, lodge and après imagery while the mountains are white. Summer gives long evenings for lake and outdoor work. Autumn brings the colour around Arrowtown and the vineyards, and spring brings blossom and fresh growth on the vines. Many businesses need both peak seasons covered, so it can be worth planning two shorter shoots.
What happens if the weather turns on the shoot day?
Alpine weather changes quickly, so we agree a backup date when we plan the shoot and watch the forecast in the days before. Interiors, products and details can usually go ahead in weather that would spoil a landscape, so a grey morning rarely means a lost day.
Do you charge for travel to Queenstown?
Yes. Flights, accommodation and transport for the crew are costed into your quote upfront, so you know the full cost before you book. Covering photo and video, or several locations, on one trip spreads that cost.
Can you shoot video on the same trip?
Yes. Our in-house crew shoots both, so we can capture short-form video for Reels, TikTok and ads, or footage for a longer brand film, alongside the stills. One trip, one look and one set of travel costs.
Do you need permits to shoot in Queenstown?
Sometimes. Commercial photography on council land in the Queenstown Lakes District, including roads, parks and reserves, needs a film permit from the council, and shoots on public conservation land need a concession from the Department of Conservation. Private property needs the owner's permission. We check what is needed during planning and build in the lead time.
How much does commercial photography in Queenstown cost?
It depends on the shot list. The main factors are the number of locations, rooms, products or experiences to cover, the mix of shot styles, any talent and styling, the level of retouching, and the travel and shoot days needed. We quote from your shot list before the shoot, so you know the full cost upfront.
Do you photograph accommodation and real estate in Queenstown?
Yes. We photograph hotels, lodges, holiday homes, show homes and developments, covering interiors, exteriors and the views that sell the location. Images are delivered for your website, booking sites and property listings, as well as ads and social.
Will the images work on booking sites and in ads?
Yes. Crops are planned before the shoot and delivered in the sizes each channel needs, from your website and booking platforms to your Google Business Profile, Meta and Google ads, Instagram and TikTok, with space left for text where ads need it.

The problem

Every business in Queenstown has the same mountains behind it.

So the view alone will not sell your stay, tour or product. Here is what usually goes wrong with commercial photography in the region, and how we run it differently.

What usually goes wrong
  • –Scenery that could belong to any business in town
  • –Images shot in one season and used all year round
  • –Harsh midday light that flattens the lake and the peaks
  • –Wide views that look great on desktop and lose the detail on a phone
  • –No link between the images and the bookings they bring in
What we do instead
  • ✓Plan the shot list around your guests, rooms, products and ads
  • ✓Time the shoot for the season and the light, with a backup date for weather
  • ✓Shoot the people, places and details only your business has
  • ✓Deliver crops for booking sites, ads, Reels and your own website
  • ✓Track how the new images perform in Refined Analytics

How a shoot runs

Planned remotely, shot on location, delivered ready to use.

Most of the planning happens on calls and in a shared shot list, so our time in Queenstown is spent shooting. Nothing is photographed without a plan for where it will be used.

Brief

A call about your business, your customers and where the images will run: website, booking sites, ads and social.

02
Plan the light

The shot list is mapped to the season, sunrise and sunset, and each location, with a backup date agreed for weather.

03
Pre-production

04
Shoot

Our crew comes down from Auckland for the shoot days and works the best light at each location, with video alongside if you need it.

05
Retouch and deliver

Colour-true retouching, then files exported for your website, booking listings, ads and social, ready to upload.

06

We track how the new images perform on your site and in your ads in Refined Analytics, so the next shoot is planned on evidence.

Commercial photography in Queenstown

Standing out in a place everyone photographs.

Almost every visitor to Queenstown leaves with a camera roll full of lakes and peaks, and every operator, lodge and real estate agent in town has the same backdrop to work with. So good commercial photography here is less about the view and more about what only your business has: the room at first light, the guide and guest at the water's edge, the cellar door on a still autumn afternoon. Refined is a photography, video and growth team based in Auckland. We plan each Queenstown shoot around where the images will run and what they need to do, then travel down to shoot it.

Who we shoot for in the Southern Lakes

Commercial photography in the region tends to serve five kinds of business. Tourism and activity operators need images that show the experience from the guest's point of view. Hotels, lodges and holiday homes need rooms, views and details that hold up on a booking site next to every other listing in town. Property developers and agents need the location sold as hard as the floor plan. Retailers and regional brands need product and lifestyle imagery for selling online, often with the landscape in frame. And across Central Otago, from Gibbston to Bannockburn and Cromwell, wineries, restaurants and producers need cellar doors, vineyards, plates and people photographed with a real sense of place.

Alpine light, and four very different seasons

The light here is clean and hard. On a clear summer day the sun is high and harsh from mid-morning, so we plan the key frames for early morning, when the lake is often still, and for the long evenings, when it stays light well past 9pm. Winter brings snow on the Remarkables, short days and low, warm light. Autumn brings the colour around Arrowtown and through the vineyards, and spring brings blossom and fast-changing weather. Many Queenstown businesses trade on two peak seasons, so it can make sense to plan two shorter shoots, one in summer and one in winter, rather than one long day that only shows half the year. Alpine weather turns quickly, so every plan has a backup date.

Planned for your website, ads and social

Before anyone picks up a camera, we agree where every image will run. A lodge might need hero images and room shots for its website and booking listings, plus vertical frames for Reels. A tour operator might need images built for Meta ads aimed at people planning a trip months ahead. A retailer might need product and lifestyle shots for an online store and its social media content. Planning this upfront means we shoot the right crops, leave space for text where ads need it, and come back with a library you can use all year rather than a folder of nice photos.

An Auckland team, on location in Queenstown

Refined is based in Grey Lynn, Auckland, and we do not have a Queenstown office. For photography, we do not need one. The planning happens on calls and in a shared shot list, Queenstown is a direct flight from Auckland, and the crew comes down for the shoot days. If you need video too, the same crew can capture short-form clips or footage for a brand film on the same trip, so you only pay for one round of travel and your stills and video share one look.

Measured on bookings, not likes

Most businesses never find out which of their photos actually earn their keep. Because Refined can also run your ads, build your website and manage your social, we can see which images lift enquiries and bookings and which creative earns the best return, live in Refined Analytics. The next shoot is then planned on that evidence rather than on taste alone.
