What is Shopify? Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform that lets you build an online store, list products, take payments and manage orders from one dashboard, without running your own servers. You pay a monthly plan fee plus payment processing fees, and you can add apps and themes to extend it. It suits most NZ retailers selling physical products online.

This guide explains how Shopify works, whether it is safe for New Zealand businesses, which fees to expect and how to get started. If you are already sure Shopify is right for you and want a store that is built to sell, see our Shopify website design service.

What is Shopify?

Shopify is software you rent, not software you install. Everything runs on Shopify's servers: your store's website, product catalogue, checkout, customer accounts and order management. You log in through a browser or the Shopify app and manage your store from there.

It started as a platform for small online shops and now powers stores of every size, from side businesses to large retailers. It handles physical products best, but it can also sell digital products, services, subscriptions and gift cards with the right setup or apps.

How does Shopify work?

At its simplest, a Shopify store has four parts:

  • Theme: the design of your storefront. You start with a free or paid theme, then customise it, or have a developer build a custom one.
  • Products and collections: your catalogue, with photos, descriptions, variants (like size and colour), prices and stock levels. Collections group products into categories.
  • Checkout and payments: Shopify's hosted checkout takes payment by card and other methods, then creates an order.
  • Apps: add-ons from the Shopify App Store for reviews, email marketing, subscriptions, shipping rules, accounting and much more.

Behind the scenes, Shopify handles hosting, security updates, SSL certificates and uptime. That is a big reason businesses choose it: you spend your time on products and marketing, not on maintaining a server.

Shopify also connects to the channels where people shop. You can sync products to Google, Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and other marketplaces, and use Shopify POS if you also sell in person.

Is Shopify legit and safe for NZ stores?

Yes. Shopify is a large, publicly listed company and one of the most widely used ecommerce platforms in the world. Many well-known NZ retailers run on it.

On security, Shopify's checkout is PCI DSS compliant, which is the card industry's security standard, and every store gets an SSL certificate. That covers the parts of security that matter most for payments. You are still responsible for the basics on your side: strong passwords, two-step login for staff accounts and care with the apps you install.

For New Zealand specifically, Shopify supports NZD pricing, GST settings, local shipping rates and Shopify Payments, its built-in payment provider. You can also connect other payment options that NZ shoppers use.

Shopify fees for New Zealand businesses

Plan prices change, so check Shopify's pricing page for current figures. What matters more is knowing which costs to budget for:

  • Monthly plan: higher plans add features, staff accounts and better payment rates.
  • Payment processing: a percentage plus a fixed fee on each card transaction through Shopify Payments.
  • Third-party transaction fees: if you use an external payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an extra fee on each order.
  • Apps: many apps charge monthly. This is the cost that quietly grows, so review your apps every few months.
  • Theme: free themes exist; premium themes are a one-off cost; custom design is a larger investment.
  • Domain and email: a .co.nz or .nz domain and business email are small, ongoing costs.

The biggest cost is rarely the platform itself. It is the time and expertise needed to set the store up well, write good product content, take strong photos and drive traffic.

How to start a Shopify store

  1. Sign up and choose a plan. Shopify usually offers a trial so you can build before you pay for a full plan.
  2. Set up the basics: store name, NZD currency, GST settings, shipping zones and rates, and your payment provider.
  3. Add products properly. Use clear titles, helpful descriptions, all the variants you sell and high-quality photos.
  4. Build your collections and navigation around how customers shop, not how your warehouse is organised.
  5. Choose and customise a theme. Prioritise speed, clear product pages and a simple mobile experience.
  6. Write your policies: shipping, returns, privacy and terms. NZ consumer law, including the Consumer Guarantees Act, applies to online sales.
  7. Connect analytics and marketing tools: Google Analytics, Google Search Console, the Meta pixel and an email platform.
  8. Test everything with a real order before you launch.

Once you are live, the work shifts to traffic and conversion. Our guide to Shopify SEO in New Zealand covers how to get your collections and products ranking on Google.

When to hire a Shopify partner

Many small stores launch on their own, and that is a sensible way to test an idea. Bring in a Shopify partner when:

  • You are moving from another platform and need products, customers, orders and URLs migrated without losing search rankings.
  • You need a custom design or features a theme cannot handle.
  • Your store is growing and slow pages, messy apps or a poor mobile experience are costing sales.
  • You want the store built around your marketing from day one, with tracking, email and ads connected properly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify good for small businesses in NZ?

Yes. It is quick to set up, handles hosting and security for you, supports NZD and GST, and grows with you. Smaller stores can start on a lower plan and upgrade later.

Do I own my Shopify store?

You own your brand, domain, content and customer data, and you can export products, customers and orders. The platform itself is rented, so you cannot move the Shopify software to another host.

Is Shopify better than WooCommerce?

For most retailers, Shopify is simpler to run because hosting, updates and security are handled for you. WooCommerce offers more control but needs more technical upkeep.
