What Is Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)? A Guide for NZ Businesses

Generative engine optimisation, or GEO, is the practice of improving how often and how accurately AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews mention your business when people ask them questions.

More customers now start their research by asking an AI assistant rather than scrolling a list of links. If those assistants do not know your business, or describe it wrongly, you are invisible at the moment someone is deciding who to call.

How generative engines decide what to say

AI assistants build answers from two broad sources:

  • What they learned in training: patterns from large amounts of public web content, collected before a cut-off date.
  • What they look up live: many assistants now search the web in real time and cite the pages they use.

Either way, they favour businesses they can describe confidently: clear facts, consistent details across many sources, and content that directly answers the question being asked.

How GEO differs from traditional SEO

Traditional SEO aims to rank a page in Google's list of results. GEO aims to get your business named, quoted or linked inside an AI-written answer. The foundations overlap heavily. A fast, crawlable website, helpful content and links from reputable sites help both.

GEO puts extra weight on three things:

  • Mentions beyond your own website: directories, reviews, media, industry associations and partner sites that describe what you do.
  • Quotable answers: short, direct explanations an AI tool can lift and attribute.
  • Clear entity information: your name, services, location and specialities stated the same way everywhere.

Five places to start

  1. Check you can be crawled. Make sure your robots.txt does not block the crawlers AI search tools use, such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.
  2. State the facts plainly. On your homepage and about page, say who you are, what you do, who you serve and where, in plain sentences.
  3. Answer real questions. Add FAQ sections and articles that answer the questions customers ask before they buy, with the answer in the first sentence.
  4. Add structured data. Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQ and Article schema help search engines and AI tools read your details accurately.
  5. Earn mentions. Get listed in relevant NZ directories, collect genuine reviews and pitch expert commentary to industry and local media.

How to measure GEO

There is no single ranking report for AI answers yet. The practical approach is to keep a list of the questions your customers ask, test them regularly across the main AI tools, and record whether you are mentioned, how you are described and which sources are cited. Pair that with referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics.

Is GEO worth doing now?

For most New Zealand businesses, yes, and early. Few local competitors are working on it yet, and the groundwork also strengthens your normal SEO. Our guide on how to get recommended by ChatGPT goes deeper on the practical steps.

The takeaway

GEO is not a replacement for SEO. It is the next layer on top of it: clear facts, quotable answers and a consistent reputation across the web.
