Local SEO Guide: Get Found in Google Maps with Google Business Profile

When someone in Auckland searches for a plumber, a cafe or a marketing agency, Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any normal results. Getting into that map pack is the fastest way for a local business to win customers from search, and it depends far more on a few basics than on budget.

Google says local results are ranked mainly on three things: relevance (how well your listing matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and well reviewed you are). You cannot change your distance, but you can improve the other two.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the single biggest local ranking factor you control. If you have not claimed it, do that first, then fill in every field.

  • Primary category: choose the most specific category that describes your main service. This affects relevance more than anything else on the profile.
  • Secondary categories: add the other services you genuinely offer.
  • Service area: list the suburbs you actually serve, such as Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, Newmarket or the North Shore.
  • Hours, phone and website: keep them accurate, including public holidays.
  • Photos: add real photos of your team, premises and work. Profiles with current photos look active.
  • Services and products: list each one with a short description.

2. Build a steady flow of reviews

Reviews feed prominence and persuade the people who see your listing. Quantity, recency and replies all matter.

  • Ask every happy customer, ideally soon after the job is done, with a direct review link.
  • Reply to every review, positive or negative, within a few days.
  • Never buy reviews or offer incentives for them. It breaches Google's policies and can get the profile suspended.

3. Keep your business details identical everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile and directory listings. Inconsistent details make it harder for Google to trust that the listings describe one business.

Put your full address and phone number in your website footer and on your contact page, and use the same format everywhere.

4. List your business in NZ directories

Directory listings, often called citations, confirm your details and add a little prominence. Start with the ones New Zealanders actually use:

  • Finda
  • Yellow
  • NZ Business directories and local business associations
  • Industry bodies and associations relevant to your trade
  • Apple Business Connect and Bing Places, which feed Apple Maps and Bing

Quality beats quantity. A handful of accurate, relevant listings does more than hundreds of low-quality ones.

5. Make your website clearly local

Your website supports your Google Business Profile, so it needs to tell Google where you work.

  • Mention Auckland and the suburbs you serve naturally in page titles, headings and copy.
  • Create a dedicated page for each main service, rather than one page listing everything.
  • If you serve distinct areas, consider location pages, but only with genuinely useful local content. Thin pages that swap suburb names do more harm than good.
  • Add LocalBusiness structured data so search engines can read your name, address, phone and opening hours.
  • Embed a Google Map on your contact page.

6. Earn local links and mentions

Links from other Auckland websites signal that you are part of the local community. Good sources include sponsorships of local clubs or events, supplier and partner pages, local news coverage and business association member directories.

How long does local SEO take?

Profile fixes are often the quickest win, especially in less competitive suburbs and categories. Competitive searches across all of Auckland take consistent reviews, content and links, so treat local SEO as ongoing work rather than a one-off fix.

The takeaway

Local SEO rewards businesses that are complete, consistent and active. Claim your profile, collect reviews steadily, keep your details identical everywhere and make your website clearly about the places you serve.
